The Lighthouse Keeper
may He illumine your way

Back in 1986
Ian and I lived on Campbell Island,
which is much smaller than Vancouver Island.
You could only get there via a small airplane
or by a very long ferry ride.
~
The ferry passed by several lighthouses en route.
We owned a small boat while we lived there
and found the lighthouses easy landmarks
to spot along a rugged coastline that looked pretty much the same
mile after mile.
~
~
It was always a comfort to see their friendly lights twinkling
as we passed by on our way to and from fishing or camping trips.
When we were invited for dinner at the lighthouse keeper’s house,
we were way too curious to decline,
even though neither of us was particularly outgoing.
(The lighthouse keeper’s wife made the best mud pie we’ve ever had.)
~
~
The lighthouse keeper and his wife were happy to have company
and were more than pleased to give us a tour of their intriguing place.
The only way to get to their little homestead was by boat.
Their supplies were brought in by helicopter,
and they even had a small landing pad for it.
~
If I could do that visit over again
I would have asked a million questions
about any rescues they had been involved with.
As it was, we talked about their garden, greenhouse and chickens.
~
~
I love rescue stories.
And my most favorite kind of all are the ones where God
reaches down from heaven
and pulls someone out of the deep.
Before and after stories of how people’s lives have been transformed
fill me with hope and joy,
especially as I think of the people I’m still praying for.
~
~
My daughter was recently surprised to hear part of my before story.
She couldn’t picture me as I had been.
I love rescue stories.
Don’t you?

Happy New Year, dear friends.

I’m switching to posting on Wednesdays
instead of on Fridays.
(I hope you’ll continue to join me here. I love your company.)
My next post will be:

Have you ever been rescued?
~
~
He reached down from on high
and took hold of me;
he drew me out of deep waters.
Psalm 18:16

Have a blessed and peaceful new year, Wendy.

I can imagine how beautiful it would’ve been to be boating by the lighthouses which were landmarks for navigation. It seems so magical! I’ve had little rescues and I’ve always thought that I’ve rescued myself from a myriad of addictions but in fact it was really God who rescued me each and every time. Happy New Year Wendy.

Beautiful photos. The sad thing about lighthouses now is that so few of them have lighthouse keepers. Have you been back to Campbell Island in recent years? As for being rescued; probably more times than I care to count. 😦

We keep talking about going back to visit some of our favorite camping spots. It’s on our bucket list. It was where I watched killer whales breach, humpback whales surface and a pod of porpoises follow us so closely I could almost touch them (one bumped our wee boat). Lots of good memories (thank you for asking). And, yes, it was sad to hear on CBC radio about the automation of many of the lighthouses. Blessings for 2015. ❀

Sounds wonderful. Sometimes it is good to go back, sometimes not. Usually if we are content with our present there’s no desperate need to go back.

Wendy, I love lighthouses. I guess it goes with the territory of living on the coast, albeit the opposite end of the country from you. I am also intrigued by your hinting of a rescue in your past. Maybe someday you will tell more, or have you already blogged about it?
Love your blog’s new theme too! 😉

Thank you, dear Jennifer. xo “Imitation is the highest form of flattery”. I’m now using the same blog theme you are. I want to write more prose in my posts without blinding my dear readers. Here’s a link to an old post that alludes to my rescue. Lily of the Valley Just this morning I sensed in my spirit a nudge toward working on a recovery book.
