Back in 1986

Ian and I lived on Campbell Island,

which is much smaller than Vancouver Island.

You could only get there via a small airplane

or by a very long ferry ride.

~

The ferry passed by several lighthouses en route.

We owned a small boat while we lived there

and found the lighthouses easy landmarks

to spot along a rugged coastline that looked pretty much the same

 mile after mile.

It was always a comfort to see their friendly lights twinkling

as we passed by on our way to and from fishing or camping trips.

When we were invited for dinner at the lighthouse keeper’s house,

we were way too curious to decline,

even though neither of us was particularly outgoing.

(The lighthouse keeper’s wife made the best mud pie we’ve ever had.)

The lighthouse keeper and his wife were happy to have company

and were more than pleased to give us a tour of their intriguing place.

The only way to get to their little homestead was by boat.

Their supplies were brought in by helicopter,

and they even had a small landing pad for it.

~

If I could do that visit over again

I would have asked a million questions

about any rescues they had been involved with.

As it was, we talked about their garden, greenhouse and chickens.

I love rescue stories.

And my most favorite kind of all are the ones where God

reaches down from heaven

and pulls someone out of the deep.

Before and after stories of how people’s lives have been transformed

fill me with hope and joy,

especially as I think of the people I’m still praying for.

My daughter was recently surprised to hear part of my before story.

She couldn’t picture me as I had been.

I love rescue stories.

Don’t you?

    1. Thank you, dear Leo. Yes, I’ve noticed the pictures of rivers you post are a lot like our rivers too. Blessings for 2015. ❀ Thank you for sharing my poetry on Twitter. I hope you have a great year for fishing and river conservation work.

  1. I can imagine how beautiful it would’ve been to be boating by the lighthouses which were landmarks for navigation. It seems so magical! I’ve had little rescues and I’ve always thought that I’ve rescued myself from a myriad of addictions but in fact it was really God who rescued me each and every time. Happy New Year Wendy.

    1. Thank you, dear Laura. I can also see the hand of God in my life before I acknowledged his existence. It’s comforting to remember He always completes what He starts.

Blessings for 2015. I look forward to seeing your latest photography. ❀

  2. Lovely anecdotes about the lighthouses, Wendy. <3 So much like life – we need the Light of the World to guide us! Best wishes and blessings for the New Year 2015. Love, Iris.

  3. Oh my, this is rich, Wendy. I love your photos, want to crawl into them, be near the surf; and your words are always soothing. I love light houses, and of course the Light House Keeper–He has rescued me many times; it seems that is what He does best. Much love to you in the New Year, dear heart–God bless you BIG.

    1. Thank you, sweet poet-friend. xo I appreciate our Light House Keeper more and more as each year passes. I keep getting into new dilemmas that I need rescuing from. 😉 Strong Tower Blessings for 2015.

  4. Another wonderful post and photos. I’d love to say more, but I’m very tired tonight and my knee is killing me. So Happy New Year! May you and yours have a very blessed year on the way. Love’n hugs, N 🙂 <3

    1. I’m so sorry your knee is hurting, dear Natalie. Pain is never a pleasant house guest. I pray that you’ll sleep well and awake to a pleasant New Year’s morning. xo Healing hugs & blessings for 2015. ❀

  5. Beautiful photos. The sad thing about lighthouses now is that so few of them have lighthouse keepers. Have you been back to Campbell Island in recent years? As for being rescued; probably more times than I care to count. 🙁

    1. We keep talking about going back to visit some of our favorite camping spots. It’s on our bucket list. It was where I watched killer whales breach, humpback whales surface and a pod of porpoises follow us so closely I could almost touch them (one bumped our wee boat). Lots of good memories (thank you for asking). And, yes, it was sad to hear on CBC radio about the automation of many of the lighthouses. Blessings for 2015. ❀

      1. Sounds wonderful. Sometimes it is good to go back, sometimes not. Usually if we are content with our present there’s no desperate need to go back.

    1. Thank you and no problem, Debbie. Once I commented on the wrong blog post after having read several of the writer’s articles. The fellow made the funniest joke out of the situation, and we all had a good laugh. ❀ Blessings for 2015.

  6. Wendy I love the story as a child I dreamed of living in a lighthouse, i don’t know why I found them fascinating. Wishing you many exciting journey’s this year especially when it comes to writing.

  7. Wendy, I love lighthouses. I guess it goes with the territory of living on the coast, albeit the opposite end of the country from you. I am also intrigued by your hinting of a rescue in your past. Maybe someday you will tell more, or have you already blogged about it?

Love your blog’s new theme too! 😉

    Hugs,
    Jennifer x

    1. Thank you, dear Jennifer. xo “Imitation is the highest form of flattery”. I’m now using the same blog theme you are. I want to write more prose in my posts without blinding my dear readers. Here’s a link to an old post that alludes to my rescue. Lily of the Valley Just this morning I sensed in my spirit a nudge toward working on a recovery book. Huge blessings on your writing journey for 2015. ❀

  8. Wendy: Write On! Keep producing your inspirational posts. May you be blessed with continued creativity. I am grateful to have discovered you and your healing work. ~ Richard

    1. Thank you, Richard. I’ve discovered that I must write–even if it’s just in a journal–write I must. Within your poetry, you manage to say so much in so few words. I admire both this and your photography. Blessings to you both in 2015. ❀

  9. what a wonderful adventure you had, visiting with the lighthouse keeper. Love all your pictures, but particularily love the last one where the bird is so large against the sky as he takes off. Just beautiful!
