Our 35th Wedding Anniversary

Our 35th Wedding Anniversary by Wendy L. Macdonald Roses, Memoir, and Poetry

This August 19 is our 35th wedding anniversary. The Bible verse we chose for our special day way back then is also the same verse that blesses us when we continue to practice what it preaches.

For when we find our delight in God first,

we will be delighted in our marriage best.

Someone mentioned their wedding flowers were peach roses, and after almost 35 years of marriage to the husband of my youth, I was prompted to realize something about our favorite Westerland rose-bush in our garden. It’s the same color the roses on our wedding cake were.

It’s funny how something can sit in sight for years and not be visible to those closest to it. I’ve also discovered old things about my husband that seem new again.

He’s still my best friend.

And I’m thankful I delighted in the Lord, for He has given me the desired man of my heart.

Delight yourself in the LORD,

and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37:4 NIV

Running the good race. Running the God race.”

~ My husband’s morning note to me today.

The Good Race (My poem in response):

Running this race

Together

No matter the storms

Our love woven with God

Will weather

All the seasons

We find ourselves in

For those who run

The God race

Always win.

I’m nosy-to-know what Bible verse or quote you’ve used for a celebration.

  1. Bless yourhugely, dear Wendy and happy anniversary! You have such a beautiful way of sharing life and faith and Jesus, all intertwined! A verse I have been using for birthdays is Luke 1:45 :
“Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”
    Blessings and hope!

  2. Happy Anniversary to you and your husband! I love the way that God brings back His Word thru the years, and shows us His faithfulness right there. What a sweet gift, those roses are! The verse the Lord keeps bringing us back to is from Isaiah 55:12 “You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace, the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.”

    1. Thank you, dear Bettie. What a wonderful verse. Walking with joy and being led with peace appeals to me more and more as I age. I appreciate the hope in His Word. <3 We're blessed to abide in Hope.

  3. Love this so much and all of your lovely pictures and the poem! Our Scripture that we remember on our anniversaries, as well as daily, is engraved in our rings: Matthew 6:33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.” But we also have songs we sing to each other, especially on our anniversary. I love the words: “As the months turn into years, through the laughter & the tears, as we walk along the street that is called life. Something inside, as I gaze into your eyes, I can see the warmth that comes from Jesus Christ…” And this one: “Don’t think you’re on a pedestal, I know what that leads to. But what I see and what I love, is Jesus using you! The gentleness of spirit and the understanding heart, the tender smile that comforts me, they’re all the Jesus part….And so you see you strengthen me, your love is used of Him, to bless me when I need it most & when the way looks dim. I don’t expect you’ll understand just why it’s you I love. I only hope I’ll bring to you some blessings from above.”

    1. Thank you for blessing me, dear Becky. Those glorious lyrics gave me goosebumps. And Matthew 6:33 is a recipe for a delicious life in Christ. Only He satisfies. When we seek other people or stuff before Him, we’re sunk.
      Hugs. <3

  4. Such beautiful roses and verses. I wish you every happiness for your 35th anniversary. We have our 36th on the 26th of the month. Our magnolia tree is starting to bloom in preparation for the day. 🙂

    1. How romantic that your magnolia is blooming for your anniversary. Our smaller magnolias were garden gifts my husband bought to celebrate our 25th. We brought them with us from our former home since they were in pots. They’re thriving in the ground here. <3

  5. Did you marry when you were twelve, Wendy? 🙂
I thought that I was much older than you, we’ve only been married 33 years. Great post and beautiful poem. Happy anniversary!

    1. Thank you, Bill. Your wife, Mary, looks at least 10 years younger than I do. 🙂 I married at 22. It seems so young to me now; however, it gave us a chance to go on some crazy adventures before our children were born. Now our whole life is one crazy adventure. But I’m willing to go anywhere if God is with me. He’s a loving and reliable Guide–isn’t He? 🙂 Blessings, dear brother.

      1. We were both 25 when we married. We had three years before our first daughter was born and we both enjoyed those three years of “getting to know one another.” I would strongly advise young married couples to wait at least two years before having kids to bond. I’m glad you also have found a spouse to help you weather life’s storms.
