God’s Promises Promote Perseverance

Each spring, when birdsong and blossoms fill my garden with music and perfume as pretty as the petals dancing in the breeze, I remember a promise.

There have been many promises made to me over the years. One of my favorites is my husband’s promise to love and cherish me ‘til death do us part. He’s continued to fulfill it since 1983. Our marriage is by no means perfect. But we’re both being perfected by the love of Christ.

Our recent venture into daily praying together for our adult children is proof God’s promise to work in and through us is continuing.

We’re motivated to pray because of a promise God made to us.

He’s a forever-promise-keeper. When we fear what the future holds, choosing to trust God will continue holding us grants us peace and promotes perseverance in our faith. Our hope in him is secure because His love for us is secure.

It’s not that bad stuff won’t happen to us, it’s that God happens to use it for our good. Just as Joseph told his brothers not to fear his wrath because God intended to use their wrongs for the salvation of many, we can rest assured our sufferings are not for not either.

When suffering strikes and stings my soul, I remember the promise made to us. I know it’s not wise to worry about the weight of this temporary world; I know it’s wise to wait on God.

The body we inhabit is only a handbreadth of a shell compared to the incorruptible one we’ll be given by Christ at the end of earth’s life. No matter what happens to this breath-of-an-abode, it’s temporary too. Cancer, arthritis, and illness are no threat to the promise I cling to. My treasure isn’t bound to this piece of ground. I’ve tucked my eternal-life-savings in the Savior and in a promise to be fulfilled at the end of this age.

You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,
even those who seem secure.
Psalm 39:5 NIV

And if I go and prepare a place for you,

I will come back and take you to be with me

that you also may be where I am.

John 14:3 NIV

The Promise

God is preparing a place
For each of His saints
Where perfection is found
Under trees of grace
God is preparing a place
For all who believe
Where burdens are no more
Beneath His healing leaves.
