Desire’s Song

Desire’s Song

****************

Desire is not met in luxuries

nor in exotic travels to foreign lands

but by companionship of kindred hearts

between one woman and one man

~

No castle needed with a moat

for safety of their love to thrive

but by commitment  of their goodwill

between them both while they’re alive

~

No crown of jewels to flaunt about

such eyes do sparkle far beyond

but by much care and attentiveness

between their lips a lover’s song.

My husband and I love checking out all of our local parks.

This one is in a prestigious neighborhood.

After I had this poem written and the pictures in place,

I wasn’t sure what I was going to say – until…

My husband mentioned a wealthy couple he did some work for in this area.

He told me about their home (castle) and the big toys with it.

His tone was not one of envy.

My husband said that he noticed a distinct sadness in the wife’s eyes.

There was something missing in the castle.

I suspect it is the Presence of the risen King that is missing.

Our humble (and adorable) home needs a new kitchen  floor, thermal windows, and a bigger fridge;

we have three teenagers.

But our home is full of his Presence.

It is a home with love and prayers.

Grace abounds and joy regularly visits.

The next time I notice the cracked kitchen floor…

I’m going to say, “Thank you, Lord, for your Presence; thank you for this castle of love!”

  1. In this day and age, it can be so easy to fall prey to covetousness. What a wonderful reminder of what’s truly important in this life, and that The Lord has given us everything for life and godliness! Thank you for sharing!

  2. Wendy, I’ve just read a post that encourages us to see the beauty around us and by doing so it says, we, “produce starlight in our minds.” Well these images and words you have shared here have done precisely that for me. They’ve produced starlight in my mind – thank you.

  3. Spectacular photos Wendy. I’ve always loved castles, but don’t have to live in one either. Have found that things like that don’t always equate with happiness. Besides, as an old country song said, ‘Love grows in small places’. Blessings!

  4. When I was about twelve I asked my Mom why a very wealthy woman she knew lived in a small house, and my Mom responded, “It is not the size, but the quality of construction that is important…besides, you only live in one room at a time.” Years later when I visited a cathedral and heard other Christians make comparison remarks about their churches, I remembered what my Mom had said about a house. After reading your words I know it applies to a marriage as well.

    1. Steve, it sounds like the gift of wisdom runs in your family. How true that we ‘only live in one room at a time’. And may we also live ‘one day at a time’ in our life and in our relationships. Have a restful weekend!

  5. Oh, you know I love this poem! And I felt sad for the “rich” wife. Truly “little” is MUCH where love and Jesus abide. May God continue to bless your home. love, sis Caddo

    1. Thank you, Caddo! Yes, it is so sad when one lacks the joy of the Lord and is unable to numb it with toys. Money cannot buy everything… and perhaps in this there is hope for the rich to see a much deeper and spiritual need.(I need Him every hour.)

    1. Thank you, Barb! We love old stuff… so our place looks like a museum with two gray haired curators and three teens. 😉 The treasures you alluded to are definitely our family bonds.

  6. My husband has lived in both a refugee camp as a child and a house with more than 3000 square feet, and everything in between! As a married couple, we have also seen the range of having very little and also more than enough. I praise God for keeping my husband’s heart grounded in what is eternal and true. It is easy to get caught up in what we want to have, instead of learning contentment on a daily basis. I love your words “castle of love”. Whether rich or poor, or somewhere in the middle, I pray that my home will always reflect God’s love as we receive it in our hearts. I have seen many who are materially wealthy, but who lack the best thing of all–a personal relationship with Christ! None of it matters without God as the anchor.

Your pictures and words are breathtaking and thought-provoking, and they always point me to the glory of our God!! Thank you for being so faithful in sharing what God gives you. Blessings, friend. –Alison

    1. Your husband would truly know that house size doesn’t add or take away from the heart of the family. I have such fond memories of when my husband was in college and I was working with just enough pay to get us by; I experienced God’s provision regularly in unexpected and much needed ways.

Thank you, Alison, for the blessing of your visits and comments. 🙂

  7. As always your photos are great food for the eye and your poem food for the soul.
Our 3 teenagers are now grown and married, but our kitchen still needs a new ceiling and floor. Hmm…
    Peace

    1. I guess as long as our kitchens are usable and warm with hearty meals and laughter… it’s all good! Blessings to you and yours. ( I just put a scatter rug over the most offensive part of the floor this week.) 😉

  8. I also suspect that to be the truth, the King of kings is missing from the castle. It is sad to be showered with so much, but still feel empty. Lovely photos.

  9. So touching and beautiful Wendy …. praying for a ‘castle of love’ in every believer’s home. Homes where loved ones are yet to follow Jesus and many at present are walking alone … and yet not alone for their Lord and Saviour steps by their side xx

    1. Thank you, dear poet friend! Liana, how true that his children never walk alone – for it’s in ones ‘singleness’ in any shape or form that his Presence is most warmly known.

    1. I now have the main ones covered with area rugs; however, I have made peace with them since writing this poem. 🙂 Thank you, Laurie, for your always encouraging visits.

  10. Wendy, this is such an inspiring post. The song that came to mind when I read this was “There’s a sweet, sweet Presence in this place…” Not sure of the title but… I learned this truth when I was quite young. I had a very rich aunt who lived in a penthouse suite. I’m not sure I knew anyone lonelier than her. She died alone. I’ve written of her in several short stories and a lengthy poem. Thank you for this post and for your comments on my poem.

  11. How could anyone wish for a grand castle among such paradise. The photographs you’ve placed into this post are a feast for my hungry eyes. They lend a softness to my weary soul. I always know when I’m extra tired and need to refresh after a bout of gentle caregiving, your blog always provides me that gentle grace to keep on doing those things I need to do. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Wendy.

    1. Sheri, there are several readers who don’t get out much that visit this blog; it makes me enjoy putting posts together all that much more to know that I am sharing creation with friends who need a respite. Thank you! xo

  12. Beautiful message! Oh to be free of desire and have a home full of love, care and compassion – that’s heaven on earth.
    Thank you Wendy.
