Handsome Young Buck

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Caught between lush nature

and mankind’s concrete starkness

where electric stars and mini moons

prevent the cloak of darkness

A choice to be cougar prey

fleeing from claws and jaws of death

Or living as Mammon’s menace

as rocks are hurled from gardeners’ steps

So he stands still as a stone

hoping I’m not one of those

who would rather harm a deer

than lose a single rose

He sees a fence and relaxes

as either way it obstructs

Just my camera takes a shot

of the cautious and handsome young buck!

This young buck was in our neighbor’s front garden.  Our neighbor does not mind since her flowers are mainly behind her house, where it is fenced… I’ve chased deer off our old acreage when they came into the garden areas; but here, in town, there must be fences!  To chase them could cause them to run into traffic and harm them or the drivers.  I’m glad my friend likes them since it means that I can enjoy him in peace; and he can have a meal in tranquility! Thank you to my daughter for alerting me to grab my camera.  My days of chasing them with a broom are over…

  3. I recently received a letter from the local deer complaining that I have not planted new flowers for them, pointing out that “rural housing communities are our fast food joints.” 🙂

    1. 🙂 I’m not surprised to hear that. When we lived out in the country they’d jump tall fences just to get at my roses etc. Yet, there was miles of forest and fields in our area…

  4. Hi Wendy I like this post, Up here in Edson, Alberta, we have a resident Mule Deer herd which lives year round right in town, not only that but the Cougars often come in and have an easy meal of them. I like the photo behind the fence best it’s very nice.

    1. Thank you! Cougars have come into our community also – including a school ground during classes! We’ve seen them when we lived out of town. They are very swift and quiet. It makes one wonder how often we’re being watched by them unawares?

      1. Oh I know Wendy, last winter i walked 800 miles, and i always carried a large knife, and a sturdy walking stick just in case. this year my bodies pain level is so high that I can’t walk. So no Cougar worries at least.

        1. Our 17 year old loves to hike and he brings a machete! No one has ever complained when they see him with it because they know… He is a gentle giant and has never raised a hand at anyone, even when shoved around by an ex-friend! Sorry to hear about your pain…

        1. You are so right, Caddo! I love the creativeness that we’ve inherited from our Father the Creator! He definitely made us in his image… I believe everyone has a creative talent of some sort that can blossom under his care. <3

  6. I have chased with a Scout whistle – but with no roads to run onto to cause harm, and literally 70-80 deer, I figure my roses were worth the mayhem!! 🙂

    1. My most memorable chase (at the country home) was when I chased a pot belly pig down our long driveway. That critter just ran fast enough so my broom couldn’t swipe at his bottom. He had a bad reputation in our neighborhood. The neighbor who owned him often had their horses escaping – too! Three of them traipsed through our place one afternoon. The bears were regular visitors also – but they had been there first! I never chased them…just video-recorded them! 🙂

    1. Well, Ian, you don’t own a gun so you’ll have to use your camera like I did… 😉 And before we fixed the fences here – I agree that they were over-sized vermin. Now they are pretty lawn ornaments next door!

  9. I was amazed at all the photos you got of him! He did look like a statue. 🙂 Aubrey wondered if it was a reindeer . ..so I looking those up and showed her the difference. You not only give us wonderful photos and poems, but teach us too! God bless you as you capture and create!

    1. Aubrey sounds so sweet! I was amazed, too, that he stayed as long as he did. It’s the closest a deer has ever let me get. They can be dangerous with their hooves – but we were on opposite sides of the fence…

  11. Great pictures! We see deer, too, in the preserve, back yard, and once bounding across a street with 50mph speed limits–I was able to slow to let him/her cross. Whenever I see deer and other critters on the move, I think a lot about the effects of our area’s construction of houses. I am glad for the preserve, and I hope it’s enough! I hope you had a refreshing weekend…we put up some Christmas decorations in the 80+ degree weather!

    1. We just put up our artificial tree today. My daughter could not wait any longer. She did almost all the work, and it looks great! There is no snow near our home but we can see it up in the mountains… We sang some Christmas hymns at church mixed in with some regular praise songs. That hour at church was one of the best parts of the whole weekend. Today’s service was just what I needed… I hope that your weekend was encouraging – too! And continue to watch out for the deer as they can cause injuries to drivers…
