A Slice of Life

A Slice of Life

~~~~~~~~~~~~
A slice of life
on the sunny side of day
cool
crisp
and crunchy
for nature’s made you
that way
Bronzed waif
leaning into branch
all weathered and worn
Supported while suspended
until elements
have you torn
As you thrive in this moment
of elevated elegance
A tenuous and temporal status
that briefly
esteems your presence
Soon time tolls the bell
as you
too
succumb
to descent
So enjoy these moments of fall flair
for the end comes
without
your consent!
I think having written this while waiting in the doctor’s office, for my son to have his stitches removed, may have something to do with the mood of it… I was writing with the picture of my favorite fall leaf photo in mind – but surrounded by elderly people who struggle to stand when their name was called… It will be my turn soon enough!  And yours.
Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”
  1. The timing of this is interesting, Wendy–I woke up from a disturbing dream that reflected my fears of losing the youthful abilities which allow us to be independent. It’s a gradual process, already begun–and keeps me in prayer. God bless you, dear heart–love, sis Caddo
    1. The loss of independence is a big one! One morning, not too long after finding out that some hip pain was caused from osteoarthritis that had done damage visible by x-ray, I sat on the edge of my bed feeling overwhelmed about the future. Then I said, “Lord, You will be there with me – whatever the future holds.” Peace washed out the fear… I am so glad that you are a woman of prayer. “He will never leave us nor forsake us.” And I love how He encourages us through his Spirit without condemnation. He cares for us!
  2. Wendy… “I was writing with the picture of my favorite fall leaf photo in mind – but surrounded by elderly people who struggle to stand when their name was called… It will be my turn soon enough! And yours.”
    This is so true! It seems like just yesterday I was home enjoying my family as a child. Now, I’m into my fifties and feeling the effects of aging. It is just as Caddo said… it keeps me in prayer.
    Another great posting reminding us of our need to continually be looking to Christ in faith, trusting Him every step of the way as we gradually age.
    Lord bless you. Rob
    1. I so agree with you and Caddo that getting older motivates us to pray. Just yesterday, I was thinking that there is even grace offered to us in the fact that we do age… it is a reminder that this life, here, is temporary. It was while working at an extended care hospital, years ago, that I was motivated to seek God as I saw so many elderly with only a few pictures by their bed and some clothes in the closet. All their old belongings meant nothing anymore! Aging is a messenger of the grace that is offered through Jesus.
  3. A few days before Thanksgiving, my dear mom underwent a cardiac catheterization, with a long history of family heart issues and a long history of super high cholesterol. I remember waiting to hear from my dad how Mom had done, and I think we all expected at least some blockages…I even played in my head the possibility of the worst case scenario, and coming to terms with my parents’ aging. My mom had no blockages! Then, just this morning, my little A. asked me, “when do we die?”…I’m not sure how much she understands, but she’s a smart cookie…I just told her “I don’t know”, and reminded her of the beauty of heaven and of God’s love, and how we just enjoy every day that we get!
    I just read the last sentence of your reply to the previous comment–“aging is a messenger of the grace that is offered through Jesus”, and I love how you put that!
    1. Thank you, Alison! I love how you allowed your little girl to ask that question and how you turned it into a positive situation. My kids also know that death is not a forbidden topic. We’ve grieved over relatives and pets openly together.
  4. Thank you for helping us look at this time of ‘descent’. Wendy . ..and pray! So thankful for His grace! God bless you! (I saw some bushes tonight, while delivering papers, and they were the loveliest color . .. I thought of you and what you might see in them!)
    1. Oh, Debbie, thank you for thinking of me when you saw those bushes! My little dog wanted outside earlier than usual this morning so I ended up out there with my head in a towel, still, and there were so many birds singing. Shortly after it started raining and has not stopped since. Bless that little dog for getting me out in time. I took a photo, too, of course since I was out there anyway.;) And I wrote a poem for it while I waited at piano lessons after lunch…
    1. Yes, Paula, he is healing nicely. Thank you for asking! He has been playing his guitar a lot; so I know his hand is not bothering him. 🙂 It makes me so happy when I hear the kids play their instruments…
