Forever Friends

Forever Friends

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once again
we walk familiar streets
in the autumn
of our lives
Together forever
Through alpha of spring
Through heat of summer
Now fading fall
with all its inclement weather
Winter’s grayness
for us
lies just ahead
But we’re determined
Quitting is not
an option
We’re committed
instead
To walk through storms
To wade through snow
Treading together
precariously
over the ice we go
At winter’s omega
I’ll walk
through the gate
alone
But when we meet again
my friend
we’ll be
forever together
at Home!
PS – I’ve just shared with you one my husband’s and my block walks. There are several routes we take: but this is my favorite since we can see the glacier well. Thank you, Ian, for walking through life’s seasons with me.
  1. My husband and I have walked figuratively through much in life together…we don’t get to walk alone literally these days! Little children give walks a whole different definition! I celebrate the journey of togetherness I have with V. as I read this lovely tribute you have written about your “forever friend”. Walking together helps the relationship to grow and thrive…it is a great gift to give one another!
    1. I agree. We have been going on walks since we first met 31 years ago last August… Sometimes when the kids were little we would just walk around our gardens after dinner, if we didn’t feel like hauling out the stroller and baby sling.
    1. We’ve had our share of valleys and storms… but we have also had God’s grace to match them. It only works if both people have basic goodwill. A sweet friend of mine has sadly (but wisely) had to leave a very ill-willed husband. Yes, we are blessed.
  2. This was so beautiful, Wendy. I feel so blessed that you shared it with us . .and a little teary too! God bless you and yours, and all that you walk through together!
    1. Thank you, Debbie. I felt a sadness when I realized that eventually we all walk through the gate alone…but we are not alone long. And, of course, the Lord never leaves us nor forsakes us! He is our Comforter.
    1. Thank you! We’ve had our low times like everyone else – but our close friendship, mutual respect, and God’s grace have brought us through them.
  3. Just a wonderful poem Wendy. There’s something about walking, I think it’s the movement, which seems to be one of the most natural things to do. And when it is done together it becomes even more uplifting. Thank you – such a good post.
    1. Thank you! I agree that there is something special about walking. I am glad it is an equal opportunity activity, too, since it is free – just put on some shoes and go. ( no tax on it either…)
